What is the average voltage output for a solar panel?

What is the average voltage output for a solar panel? I’m speaking of the small sized ones that would go on the side of a house. Perhaps an answer given in per-area would be good.

Individual cells are about 1/2 volt each. How they are interconnected and how many cells there are determine the total voltage and current.

Larger ones are configured usually for 12 or 24 volts.

It’s like a bunch of 1.5 volt batteries. You can connect them all in parallel, all in series, or any of many series parallel combinations.

    Solar panels and balance of system are generally grouped into nominal voltage, which is a common number that is used to make sure you match like to like. For instance, in a battery based system, you would use a 12V panel, 12V charge controller, and 12V battery bank. 12V panels actually output around 17V when connected, while 12V batteries that are full are around 14V. But they are both called 12V so you know they work together. 18V panels usually put out around 29V, and 24V panels put out around 34V. That’s the voltage at maximum power (Vmp), you can find the spec on all panels. Then there’s panels that are odd numbers like 32V and 42V that aren’t usually used in battery based systems, just grid tied.

    When you use any of these in a grid tied application without batteries, you generally wire them together in series to output from 150V up to 600V DC, depending on the inverter used. The inverter then converts that to 120 or 240V AC (in North America).

    Small panels 135W and under are usually 12V, larger ones vary.
